Feel a little weird this morning, so I just scanned a few things from a random scrapbook selection. Most are from when I was an intermediate or junior. I’ll be more creative tomorrow I hope. You can click on any of the photos to enlarge.
This is a photo of the first team I rode for. It was the Mt. Oread Bicycle Club sponosored by Blue Hills Bike Shop. Gene Wee, who ran the Student Union Activities office at KU organized it. This allowed both Kris and I to travel to races that we never would have had the money to attend.
My first real bike. I rode this as an intermediate, just until I had mowed enough yards to buy a Colnago. How about those Phil Wood hubs?
This is a newspaper article about me going to race Nationals the week after I broke my collarbone in SuperWeek. I wasn’t much in waiting around to heal back then either.
My first contract from SRC/Michael Fatka. It was a real step down from the support I had received from Mt. Oread, but a must do for advancement. What a cheap skate on shorts? But, my hat situation was stellar.
The first time I rode the Red Zinger/Coor’s Classic, I rode for a composite team sponsored by ArchorSteam Beer. I wonder if I still have that jersey, it was wool and super hot. That is Tom Chew, my team mate, beside me.

I remember Michael had the picture of you riding your rollers in the “Paris” office. It had a head line something like “Tilford wants to race badly” and Michael had written under the headline “and he does!”
I remember that photo hanging in Michael’s office as well, good color commentary! And 10 hats, wow!
I still have a Lejeune like that hanging in my garage.
Seemed like a great bike in ’74 or ’75.
I don’t think I even have that Mt. Oread team photo!
steve….keep these old photos coming from this era…..I was living the same dream back then
but on a much smaller scale (willmar minnesota)
we were so removed from cycling ,but had a rabid group that bought expensive bike ($200-$300)
from Minneapolis(exotic location to us)
and rode 100’s of miles every week
Cheers to you
Yo Tilli, how the heck did I stumble on this site? Vortex back in time…I remember the Chew brothers!
