Here are a couple old time photos that I received yesterday. Nearly every rider in these photos shaped my ability to race bicycles. I was so fortunate to have guys like Wayne, Tom, Steve and John around to observe, to teach me how to race bicycles, not only physically, but efficiently and intellectually. I learned so much from each and everyone one of them. I still know them all, which says something about how a close knit community our sport is.
Love the photos….but Steve – Could you label the faces in the first photo….tell us who each rider is?
dave- Sure. Steve Jennings is in the lead. He is from Oklahoma. He was in the break for 100 miles and flatted 7 miles from the finish. Tom Schuler, from Michigan, is over on the right off his seat. He told me he was sure he was going to win the sprint, since he had beaten Wayne a couple times, head to head, that season, but he ended up 3rd. Wayne Stetina, from Indiana, is in the middle, peaking through. He is wearing a Coolgear/Exxon jersey. He won the race. And the other two are Hoffman and Boll. I don’t know them personally, but they were obviously very good riders.
Tomac ruled. Classic photo.
Tomac is such a badass.
His kid is the second coming too.
Johnny T – class act! when I first got into this sport he was just starting to assert his dominance on the dirt. Legend. And… is that a beer he’s about to crack in that photo? LOL Keep up the posts, always a nice break in my day to read
Looks like that pic of Tomac was taken during Fat Tire Bike Week at Crested Butte in 1990. I was there and have some photos of you, Dave Wiens, Ned, Joe Murray, Rishi, and others.
Just spoke with John a couple weeks ago at the Oakland Supercross. Still the same guy.
Love the vintage photos, thanks!
