Ambulance Ride to Iowa City-Surgery Tomorrow Afternoon

This entry was posted in Racing on by .

This afternoon went pretty bad. I’m in an ambulance right now being transferred to Iowa City. I fell before the race and fractured my hip. Man, before the pain medicine, that one is pretty painful injury. It’s a 4 hour surgery and 6+ week recovery. Could be worse. Alright, I need to fill out forms.

Steve really sorry to hear this. We wish you a speedy recovery, and if there is anything we can do to help, just ask. The city of Dallas mourns your mishap.

    Steve,

Heal well, and most importantly, heal smart. You’ve learned a few lessons recently with your shoulder, make it count now. Put simply, the way your hip heals is going to affect the way your entire body feels from here on out. When you start walking, your spine and your back and abdominal muslces will be significantly affected by the imbalance as you begin the healing process after surgery. Work to regain symmetry in strength, flexibility, and agility. With your active lifestyle, which goes so far beyond cycling, patience and attention to detail will pay off.

Sorry if this sounds preachy, but you thrive on constant motion and I’d like to see you continue to enjoy all of your activities and avoid another long battle with injury. Best wishes for a full recovery.

    Gina

Bummer ! I went through Rotator cuff surgery about the same time as you, following along. That was tough but now this! ? Best of luck. Time heals.

Gina had some very good comments. We wish you a speedy and complete recovery. I crashed 3 weeks ago. Doctor said it should have broken my hip and femur head. I was really lucky. Had a hematoma pop out nearly 6 inches from the hip. It is mostly gone, but there still is a lump. The most important thing you can do is plan and execute a correct recovery. Follow directions closely and don’t get too aggressive with yourself. Keep posting, there are a lot of people who care about you!

Terrible! Are broken hips a lot more common in older riders? Seems a lot of older riders have been breaking their hips later but I can’t think of any young ones doing it. Hope you heal fast.

Hope the surgery goes well and the recovery is quick. The body doesn’t heal the same way at our age. You’re an inspiration to us older racers. Hope you all goes well.

Hey Steve, So damn sorry to hear this. This procedure has come a long way in the last decade or so. I have friends who have had very good luck with it. Hang in there, dude.

This is just awful to read. I hope you get back on your feet soon. But LISTEN to your doctors and therapists. We love your rogue and individualistic persona, but put it aside for a while and follow the recovery plan. Not just for our sake or for racing, but just for your overall health, well-being, and day-to-day happiness. Sacrificing in the short-term will lead to more active adventures in the long-term.

Sorry to hear about that, what an anti-climactic end to a season. Falls are dangerous, another friend of mine about two weeks ago died in a freak fall in his living room, tripping over a computer cord and hitting a metal table leg very wrong…

Terrible news and bad luck. Here’s to a full recovery. You’re a tough one you can do it.

I hope surgery goes well – I’ve enjoyed following you on your blog and you’ve been a big inspiration to get back racing again. Get well soon and give your body time to rest! Best regards Jacob from Denmark

So sorry to hear about your fall, but Gina has some great advice!! Your shoulder rehab time didn’t go very well, so take the time to heal so it won’t have any adverse affects later on.

    Take care!!

Good luck w/ the surgery. Fractured my hip in a bike crash 1-1/2 years ago. I was riding 6 weeks later, but probably should have laid low for a couple months. I was able to ride at full capacity 3 months after the crash but it was a good 6 months before all the fractures “sealed up”. Works like a charm now feels like I never broke it, so hang tough … an easy task for one of the toughest guys in cycling.

I broke my back in a racing accident several years ago. I rode my bike 30 days after the accident around the block. It was another 5 months before I got on it again. Get well, take each day as it comes, Try – not to get all your fun in – in one day. Accept the help from all those that want to help you. Take your vitimins and calcium tablets – this helped me make that bones heal better and my body feel better. Call if you need anything.
